Smoke alarms are an essential part of any home fire safety plan, and there are laws in place in Queensland to ensure that all homes have working smoke alarms installed. They include:

Home Owners: By 1st January 2027, home owners must replace smoke alarms manufactured 10 years ago with interconnected photoelectric detectors to comply with national standards. They also need to be either hardwired or fitted with non-removable 10-year lithium batteries.

Selling: It has been a requirement for property sellers to replace smoke detectors made 10 years ago with interconnected smoke alarms since 1st January 2022. All alarms must be powered by 10-year non-removable batteries or need to be hardwired.

Landlords: As of 1st January 2022, landlords need to replace smoke alarms produced 10 years ago with interconnected photoelectric alarms at rental properties. They must also be hardwired or have 10-year non-removable batteries.
